The only way to truly understand a tea is by drinking it.
- At Zuo Wang Tea, our goal is to share quality tea that tastes great, smells delightful, and most importantly creates a sense of balance and health in the imbiber. This can only be accomplished by drinking tea that is grown naturally and processed with great skill. Countless marketing campaigns have eroded the significance of terms used to describe quality tea: Gu Shu, Ancient Tree, Wild Tea, natural, organic, quality, direct from the farm, etc.. To understand the meaning and weight of these words, we would have to understand the rich history of tea and its current market, which is complex. However, by understanding the basic principles of what marks the characters of tea and by sharpening our own senses we can find the truth in the tea. Our opinion is that the only way to truly understand a tea is to drink the tea. The understanding can be small or vast at first, depending on our experience and skill, but we find good teachers and we practice. We believe calming the mind, increasing sensory acuity, and critical analysis are all skills we can carry into the rest of our lives.
- Our tea is grown without man-made nutrition and free from pesticides and additives. Our teas are sun dried; the industry standard for many teas is to machine dry them at very high temperatures. Machine drying cooks many of the nutrients out of the leaves and brings them to the surface. These mass-produced plantation teas often have a strong upfront smell and taste that confuses people into thinking it is great tea, however the Cha Qi will be weak, they will not brew as many "steeps" of tea, and they will not age well. Conversely, our Lincang teas have smooth and powerful Cha Qi, are long lasting, and will age very well. These statements should be tested and proven.
- Our tea leaves come from Camellia Sinensis, a species of evergreen shrub or tree that produces 茶, chá, or tea. Most of our teas come from Lincang, a large area located in Yunnan, China. These teas come from “Gu Shu”, translated as “Old Trees”, which have been exposed to the elements for centuries and produce dynamic and vibrant tea leaves. The age of the trees range from 150 to 500+ years depending on the tea.
- In order to truly experience reality we must forget the "facts", the marketing, and the story we are told. We can increase our level of awareness by focusing our minds on whatever activity we are doing. When we drink tea, we completely focus on drinking tea, and we can therefore understand the truth of the tea in front of us.
