Dong Guo, Old Arbor Spring 2017 Sheng Puerh
The Sheng (Raw) Puerh tea leaves come from from 300 year old tea trees in Xi Ban Shan, MengKu, Lincang, Yunnan, China. Dong Guo grows in a rocky environment with difficult conditions, and its exposure to the elements shows in its powerful character. The taste and smell are quite strong for Lincang Puerh, and it has a powerful yet smooth Qi. This tea is exceptional for aging, and it is also amazing to drink now. The Dong Guo teamaker is a very confident man with strong Qi. He is very proud of his tea, and we believe this is reflected in the tea which has a strong, bold character.
Of note, the 2017 Dong Guo is a bit sweeter than the 2015 because from 2016 and on, some younger leaves (~5 days younger) of the same trees were used. This is partly due to competition standards which mainly focus on a tea's sweetness, smell, and color. Competitions do not evaluate Qi. In effort to win the competition (in which Dong Guo received the Golden Prize), some younger leaves were used to make the Dong Guo. Arguably, the 2015 Dong Guo's Qi is a bit stronger due to the tea being composed of exclusively older leaves (~5 days older).
